About Matthew House, J.D.
Matthew earned his law degree at the University of Idaho College of Law in 2005, after completing his Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, at the University of Oregon in 2002, majoring in Spanish. Prior to law school and in the summers during law school, Matthew taught Spanish to students from Grades 3-12. (Matthew is happy to help his mediation clients' kids with Spanish homework!) Until the end of his third year in college, Matthew had intended to become a Spanish teacher.
In 2001, Matthew decided to pursue a law degree. He attended the University of Idaho College of Law on a full tuition scholarship. Pursuing a career in family law seemed perfect, as a child of divorced parents and as a former teacher who has worked with hundreds of teen and pre-teen students.
At UI, after completing the Professional Responsibility course, part of the required second-year curriculum, Matthew realized that the duties of a zealous advocate for one party in a family law case might be more contentious than he wanted. Pivoting to mediation was more consistent with his goals and values.
Matthew passed the Oregon Bar Exam in 2005 on his first attempt. However, Matthew has focused his entire career on mediation, rather than the practice of law. He opened his first office in Downtown Portland in 2005 and relocated his practice to Beaverton in 2007. Since 2010, Matthew's office has been located at Central Beaverton's comfortable and well-appointed BG Plaza.
Outside of work, Matthew has a variety of interests. Chief among them is Major League Baseball. Matthew often watches baseball with his clients' kids when they come to visit, and he rarely misses a Washington Nationals game.
Matthew is an advocate for kids in the foster care system and is in the process of training to become a Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). He works diligently to ensure that no child is left behind or forgotten. That commitment also extends to his mediation practice.
