Matthew also strives to maintain the lowest total fees of any law-degreed Portland-area family mediator. His thoughtful and thorough process meets the needs of his clients and their children. Matthew is unique among divorce mediators in the tri-county area, as he offers no-cost meetings for clients' children (ages 12-22).

Divorce Without Attorneys

When you come to mediation with Matthew, only he, you, and the other spouse will be present. Matthew has learned from two decades of experience that, by and large, two adults can be reasonable with each other, even at a time of great diffculty. By not including attorneys in the room, you will save considerable money, to be sure, and you will be focused on solutions and compromise.

A Step Toward Long-Term Peace and Co-Parenting

There is another more subtle benefit of working through the issues with just your spouse and a law-trained, neutral facilitator: You will see that you can interact cooperatively with the other party. That's important not just for a few mediation sessions over the course of a month or so, but also for years to come as co-parents. Even if you have no minor children, you will probably need to collaborate with your spouse to complete aspects of the divorce after it is finalized, and you may also cross paths with each other from time to time for other reasons. Knowing that you succeeded in communicating and solving problems even in the most contentious circumstances will give you confidence that your future interactions will also be low-conflict and solution-oriented.

Ohana: No One (and No Detail) Gets Left Behind or Forgotten

Picture
Many years ago, Matthew received advice that has stuck with him to this day and guides his ethical approach: "Treat your clients as you would treat your immediately family and would expect a family member to be treated in similar circumstances."

Matthew firmly believes in and does his best to adhere to the
"Ohana" philosophy: No one (and no detail) gets left behind or forgotten. Divorce affects every member of the family. Every family has unique needs and priorities. No matter how particular your requirements may be, Matthew can put in writing almost anything that both parties agree to include.

Matthew focuses on details that the divorce forms and most other mediators leave out. Many people do not know that a marital settlement agreement can be attached to your divorce forms. That means that you are not limited to addressing only the questions that the state forms require, nor are you limited to only the options that the forms may present. Your agreement is like an instruction manual that you can refer to when you need to remember the steps to solve a problem in the future. The difference is that it is written for you and tailored to your particular specifications, instead of a one-size-fits all document.

You Can Begin Mediation Right Away

Matthew will schedule you promptly if you are ready to meet. He guarantees that he will be available within three business days of your request. If you are unavailable during regular business hours, he will accommodate your scheduling needs. Matthew is available weekdays, evenings, and weekends. He also guarantees that he will be available within three business days of your initial request for mediation. If you are ready to mediate, Matthew is ready to help you.

To discuss your needs and the Oregon divorce mediation process, please consider a free consultation.  Matthew works primarily in Multnomah County, Washington County, and Clackamas County, but he can provide services to any Oregon resident. He can meet at his office or via Zoom.
