Matthew's Experience
Matthew has 18 years of experience in private practice as a mediator of family law matters. He has had extensive training in mediation and law (more than 1500 hours) in Idaho and Oregon. Prior to law school, Matthew earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude with departmental honors, from the University of Oregon, where he majored in Spanish.
Matthew has worked with over 1,500 couples and families. Matthew's married or partnered clients have ranged in age from 19 to 82. He has worked with couples who have children and those who do not. He serves clients who are married, registered domestic partners, and domestic partners who are not formally registered. During his 17 years of private practice, Matthew has worked with same-gender couples and opposite-gender couples. He has experience with all types of couples -- those who are married and now intend to separate or divorce, those who are already divorced and now need to modify past agreements, and those who were never married but now need to separate for the first time or modify a prior agreement.
Matthew has been interviewed extensively -- more than 30 times -- from coast to coast as a recognized expert on family law and juvenile law. He has also written more than 40 original articles in newspapers throughout the United States.
What experience does Matthew have with kids and teens?
Matthew has taught and tutored for 25 years, since he was 18 years of age. He did numerous practicum placements in high schools as an undergraduate and taught Spanish to elementary school students for two years. As a divorce mediator for the past 17 years, Matthew has met with hundreds of kids, especially teens and pre-teens. Even though Matthew did not end up making teaching his full-time career, his various practicum placements provided him several thousand hours of in-classroom practice working with teens and pre-teens. Matthew continues to dedicate many hours of pro bono service to teens and pre-teens every month.
Matthew consistently gets positve feedback from the teens and pre-teens who meet with him. The majority of them remain in touch with him for years and visit periodically even after they become adults.
